Subfloor Upgrades: Why We Use 1-1/8” Sheathing for Strong, Flat Floors

If you’re investing the time and money to re-level a floor — especially in an older home with bounce, squeaks, or sag — it’s worth finishing the job with the right subfloor material.

At Orange County Handyman Services, we prefer 1-1/8″ tongue-and-groove subfloor sheathing (commonly called “Sturd-I-Floor”) for almost all floor leveling and subfloor replacement projects. It creates a solid, creak-free base that outperforms traditional 3/4″ plywood in strength, span, and durability.

This upgrade isn’t just for luxury homes. We install this thicker sheathing in properties from Orange County to Pasadena, Whittier, and even hilly homes in La Habra Heights — anywhere the client wants peace of mind (and a flatter floor).

🪚 What Is Subfloor Sheathing?

The subfloor is the layer of material between your floor joists and the finished flooring (carpet, tile, vinyl plank, hardwood, etc.).

It plays a major role in:

  • Floor flatness
  • Noise resistance
  • Structural strength between joists
  • Support for heavy furniture or remodels

Most homes built from the 1960s–1990s used 5/8″ or 3/4″ plywood, which over time tends to:

  • Sag between joists
  • Delaminate from moisture
  • Flex when walked on

💪 Why We Prefer 1-1/8″ Subfloor

Here’s why 1-1/8″ tongue-and-groove sheathing is our go-to choice:

Stiffer across long spans (even up to 24” OC joists)
Minimal deflection or bounce — feels like concrete underfoot
Reduces squeaks and movement under tile or hardwood
Creates flatter planes for easier flooring install
✅ Holds fasteners better and resists nail pops over time

In one recent job near Brea, we replaced saggy 5/8″ plywood with 1-1/8″ sheathing after sistering the joists. The client couldn’t believe how “quiet” and “solid” the new floor felt — even before flooring was installed.

⚒️ Subfloor Installation Tips

  • Always install perpendicular to the joists
  • Use adhesive + screws — not nails
  • Leave 1/8″ expansion gap between sheets
  • T&G joints should land over joists when possible
  • For bathrooms or kitchens, seal edges with waterproofing primer

🛠️ Ideal Projects for 1-1/8” Sheathing

  • Floor leveling + remodeling (especially older homes)
  • Upstairs bedrooms or living areas
  • Rooms with planned tile, stone, or engineered flooring
  • Fixing soft or squeaky floors
  • Preparing for underlayment or floating floors
