That familiar creak… squeak… creak as you walk across your hallway or bedroom floor might seem harmless — but it can signal more than just loose boards. Sometimes it’s a quick fix. Other times, it’s a warning that your subfloor or joists are failing.
At Orange County Handyman Services, we’ve diagnosed hundreds of squeaky floors across OC, Los Angeles County, and the Inland Empire. Let’s help you figure out if your floor needs a quick tweak — or a deeper repair.
🎯 First: What Causes Floor Squeaks?
Most floor squeaks happen when two materials rub together, often due to:
- Loose or separating subfloor from the joists
- Nails popping out or old glue failing
- Movement in joists due to sag or improper support
- Flooring (especially hardwood or LVP) rubbing against trim or itself
In raised foundation homes, floors tend to squeak more over time — especially if the crawl space supports have shifted or the subfloor is thin or warped.
🧪 5 Signs It’s Just a Surface Fix
✅ The squeak is isolated to one step or board
✅ The flooring is older hardwood and visibly rubs
✅ There’s no bounce or noticeable slope in the area
✅ There are no cracks or visible damage in walls or baseboards
✅ You hear the squeak but don’t feel floor movement
➡️ Fix:
You may only need to:
- Add screws through the subfloor to tighten it to the joists
- Inject wood glue or use a floor squeak repair kit
- Add screw shims from below if the area is accessible
🚧 5 Signs the Joists or Subfloor Need Repair
⚠️ The squeak is part of a larger, soft area of flooring
⚠️ You feel a dip, bounce, or deflection underfoot
⚠️ The noise changes over time (e.g., gets worse during certain seasons)
⚠️ Your floor is built over a crawl space with old or missing posts
⚠️ The floor feels sloped, especially along one side
➡️ Fix:
In these cases, we may need to:
- Sister the joists to restore strength and level
- Replace or reinforce the subfloor (especially if it’s only 5/8″)
- Add or repair crawl space posts and pads
- Laser-level the room to identify sag and slope

🛠️ Done Right. Done Once.
Whether it’s a simple screw job or a full subfloor rebuild, our goal is to fix the squeak for good — not just hide it. Because once the new flooring goes in, it’s 10x harder (and more expensive) to fix what’s beneath it.
